Seven Tools for Life

Chapter 1: Have a Clear Vision

📌 That is what a clear vision gives you: a way to decipher whether a decision is good or bad for you, based on whether it gets you closer or further away from where you want your life to go. Does the picture you have in your mind of your ideal future get blurrier or sharper because of this thing you’re about to do? ⏱ 2023-11-21 23:26:43

📌 The earliest vision I had for my life was very broad. It was of America. Nothing more specific than that. ⏱ 2023-11-21 23:29:37

📌 Having a broad vision gives you an easy, more accessible place to start from when it comes to figuring out where and how to zoom in. ⏱ 2023-11-21 23:32:59

⏱ 2023-11-22 00:00:59

📌 Which it literally could be. Many of history’s greatest thinkers, leaders, scientists, artists, and entrepreneurs found some of their greatest inspiration going for walks.

You need to SEE IT. ⏱ 2023-11-22 00:08:53

Continued, Be Useful_1

📌 Nobody gets into sports to not win. So why would you go through life to not aim for exactly what you want? This life isn’t a dress rehearsal, it’s not a practice or a training session, it’s the real thing. It’s the only one you have. So see it … and then be it. ⏱ 2023-11-22 00:13:27

⏱ 2023-11-23 08:48:55

Chapter 2: Never Think Small

⏱ 2023-11-23 09:02:45

📌 I don’t let it go. I don’t move on. I don’t quit. And I don’t compromise. There is no plan B. Plan B is to succeed at plan A. ⏱ 2023-11-23 09:09:20

Continued, Be Useful_1

⏱ 2023-11-23 09:14:08

📌 Granted, I am a lunatic. I don’t do anything like a normal person. I don’t have normal dreams. My risk tolerance for big goals and new challenges is sky high. Everything I do, I do big. ⏱ 2023-11-23 12:28:58

⏱ 2023-11-23 12:43:37

Chapter 3: Work Your Ass Off

⏱ 2023-11-23 23:57:28

📌 Not just doing reps, but tracking them. At the local weight-lifting club in Graz, I’d write my entire workout on the chalkboard, down to the number of sets and number of reps, and I wouldn’t let myself leave until I’d marked them all off. ⏱ 2023-11-24 00:04:21

📌 Nothing builds character like resilience or perseverance through pain. Nothing destroys character like succumbing to pain and quitting. ⏱ 2023-11-24 00:12:04

📌 The person who is OK doing four sets of ten shitty half reps on the pulldown machine is more likely to sloppily change their baby’s diaper or forget their partner’s order at their favorite restaurant than the person who struggles through five sets of fifteen painful but perfect reps, even if it takes them longer and leaves them exhausted. Especially then, I would say, because those people know how good it feels to work hard and do things the right way. ⏱ 2023-11-24 00:21:05

⏱ 2023-11-24 00:24:43

📌 I chose to do bricklaying because it was like an extra workout. I got to work on my tan and practice my English on people, and I got to enjoy the sense of pride that comes with building things. You have to remember, my goal wasn’t just to come to America, it was to become part of America. ⏱ 2023-11-24 00:26:21

Continued, Be Useful_1

📌 Do you know how many times people tell me they don’t have time to work out, and then I ask them to take out their phones and show me their screen time stats and it says they spent three and a half hours on social media? It’s not hours in the day you lack, it’s a vision for your life that makes time irrelevant. ⏱ 2023-11-24 00:29:51

📌 Do you have any idea how powerful an hour a day is? If you want to write a novel, sit down and write for an hour every day, and aim for just one page. At the end of the year, you will have a 365-page manuscript. That’s a book! ⏱ 2023-11-24 00:35:15

Chapter 4: Sell, Sell, Sell

⏱ 2023-11-24 07:51:58

📌 When it comes to realizing your dreams, you cannot allow that to happen. In fact, it should never happen, because no one is better equipped or motivated than you to sell your vision to the world. It doesn’t matter if you want to move your family to a different country or your football team to a new town, if you want to make movies or make a difference, if you want to build a business, buy a farm, join the military, or create an empire. No matter the size of your dream, you have to know how to sell it and who to sell it to. ⏱ 2023-11-24 07:54:20

⏱ 2023-11-24 08:08:58

📌 Jim’s point to me was that no one who puts a microphone in front of your face and asks you a bunch of question is doing it as a favor to you. They have their own agenda, whether that’s finding a way to fill up column inches, coaxing out a controversial statement that gets more attention, or in some cases just trying to make you look like an asshole. ⏱ 2023-11-24 08:20:32

📌 “Arnold, you’ve never run for office before at any level. What makes you think you’re equipped to run the biggest state in the country?”” “That’s a great question, but you know a better question is how can the greatest state in the country afford to continue down this road with the same kind of politicians who got us into this mess in the first place?” ⏱ 2023-11-24 08:21:45

Chapter 5: Shift Gears

📌 answer to them is simple: Learn from your mistakes and then say, “I’ll be back.”

📌 If anything, when you look at it with the right perspective, failure is actually the beginning of measurable success, because failure is only possible in situations where you’ve tried to accomplish something difficult and worthwhile. You can’t fail when you don’t try. In that sense, failure is kind of like a progress report on your path to purpose. It shows you how far you’ve come, and it reminds you how far you still have to go and what you have to work on to get there. It’s an opportunity to learn from your mistakes, to evolve your approach, and to come back better than ever. ⏱ 2023-11-25 16:21:29

📌 In the gym, failure doesn’t equal defeat, it equals success. It’s one of the reasons I’ve always been comfortable pushing the limits in everything I do. When failure is a positive part of the game you play, it’s much less scary to search for the limits of your ability—whether that’s speaking English, acting in big movies, or tackling big social problems—and then once you’ve found those limits, to grow beyond them. The only way to do that, though, is to constantly test yourself in a manner that risks repeated failure. ⏱ 2023-11-25 16:21:29

📌 Failure is inevitable in a lot of ways. But when it comes to achieving your vision, it isn’t failure you have to worry about, it’s giving up. Failure has never killed a dream; quitting kills every dream it touches. No one who has set a world record, or started a successful business, or set the high score on a video game, or done anything difficult at all that they cared about, has been a quitter. They got to where they are on the back of numerous failures. ⏱ 2023-11-25 16:21:28

⏱ 2023-11-25 16:21:28

📌 When you’re chasing a big vision, you have to expect that you’ll face resistance. People who lack vision are threatened by those who have it. Their instinct is to throw their hands up and say, “No! Wait a minute, let’s slow down here.” It’s not that they think you can’t do it, like the typical naysayer, it’s that they think it shouldn’t be done in the first place. New ideas are scary to them. Big projects are intimidating. They’re uncomfortable around people who want to break the mold or make waves. ⏱ 2023-11-25 16:24:53

Continued, Be Useful_1

⏱ 2023-11-25 16:32:51

Chapter 6: Shut Your Mouth, Open Your Mind

📌 Goal setting, planning, working hard, pushing through failure, communicating, the value of helping others—for all of these things the gym was my laboratory. It was my high school, my college, and my graduate school all in one ⏱ 2023-11-26 00:03:30

📌 Having the patience and humility to listen well is an essential ingredient of curiosity, and it’s the secret to learning ⏱ 2023-11-26 00:10:18

📌 How did you come up with this exercise? Why does this work better than other similar movements? How should I best incorporate it into a workout? ⏱ 2023-11-26 15:10:51

📌 Use it or lose it. These words apply to so many areas of life, they should be considered a law of the universe. ⏱ 2023-11-26 15:13:07

📌 Use it or lose it is the rule with ripe fruit, political goodwill, media attention, coupons, economic opportunity, space to pass on the highway, all sorts of things. But most importantly, it’s true of the knowledge you soak up over your lifetime. If you don’t regularly flex your mind like a muscle and put your knowledge to work, it will eventually lose its power. ⏱ 2023-11-26 21:45:41

Chapter 7: Break Your Mirrors

📌 ’m not alone in this. We are all here thanks to the contributions of other people. Even if you never had a positive influence in your life; even if everyone you’ve ever run into was an obstacle or an enemy or they did nothing but hurt you—they have all still taught you something. That you’re a survivor. ⏱ 2023-11-26 21:45:34

📌 None of us has ever done anything on our own when you really think about it. We have always had help or guidance. Others have paved or pointed the way for us in some form or another, whether we were aware of it beforehand or not. And now that you know this, it’s important for you to recognize that you have a responsibility to give back. To help others. To send the ladder back down and lift the next group up. To pay it forward. To be useful. ⏱ 2023-11-26 21:45:37

📌 Let me tell you, outside of direct athletic competition, it’s almost all bullshit. Life isn’t zero-sum. We can all grow together, get richer together, get stronger together. Everyone can win, in their own time, in their own way.

A Final Thank-you

📌 Muhammad Ali showed me what real grit and perseverance looks like, and what it takes to really stick to your guns. ⏱ 2023-11-26 21:45:39
